World of Whisky

Spirits

Just as the flags of different countries are individual so are the whiskies of the world. Different ingredients, production methods and traditions produce unique flavours of whisky. Some countries have been distilling whisky for hundreds of years while others are relative newcomers to the industry. All have something different to offer the discerning whisky connoisseur.

Here we take a look at five popular producers of whisky - Ireland, Japan, US, India and Canada and offer you a good sample for each nation.

Ireland

With a similar start to Scotch whisky, Irish whisky has developed its own flavours over time with many describing it as smooth and light.

The Irishman Single Malt is a triple-distilled single malt classic whisky. Aged in Bourbon and Sherry casks.

Japan

Closely aligned to the Scottish flavours, the Japanese whiskies just have an oriental twist on them.

The Yamazaki 12 year old has a delicate, mellow taste and dry finish. The aromas include dried fruit and honey.

The United States

Different flavours and ingredients such as wheat and rye are used in American whiskey as well as corn in their famous bourbon.

From Kentucky, The Willett Pot Still is dry and spicy at first developing into citrus and sweet oak notes.

India

A blended spirit distilled from fermented molasses with a grain whisky or pre-blended Scotch whisky added.

Using Islay peat Paul John Bold has a honeyed oak, fruity coffee flavour with a peppered oak finish.

Canada

While Canadian whisky is predominantly made with corn, rye grain is added to give it a tangy flavour. Canadian whisky is also referred to as rye whisky.

The Canadian Club 8 year old has a rich, smooth flavour after being distilled and matured in char-treated American white oak barrels.

Italy

One of the latest entrants to the whisky production table, Italian whiskies are being made from locally sourced grains, mountain spring water and Scottish copper pot stills.

Puni Nero 3 year is the first Italian malt whisky and has notes of herbal honey, wood spices, raisins and plums.

France

As the number one single malt consumers in the world, the French know their whisky and their level of production is beginning to reflect this despite being new to the market.

Michel Couvreur Candid offers delicately bitter-sweet flavours with a flourish of spices.

With every country offering something different in whisky, you don’t need to leave home to taste a wide variety of whiskies and find one or two favourite producers.
