Carmenere
The Carmenere grape is a descendant of the Cabernet family. Originally located in the Medoc region of Bordeaux, France, the name is derived from the word crimson, translated to carmin in French, because of its spectacular crimson colouring of the vine's leaves just before they would fall.
Carmenere is joined in illustrious company alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot as one of the “six red grapes of Bordeaux”. These days, the Carmenere grape is primarily found in Chile and scarcely grown in France. In Chile, a Carmenere wine can have 15% of other grape varieties blended with it.
The climate of Chile lends itself nicely to the Carmenere grape as it prefers a increased growing season with warmer climates. It rarely grows in areas that have large rainfall. This allows for a delicious mix of black plums, blueberry and blackberry notes. The grape can also produces a subtle cocoa and green pepper aroma. A great tasting Carmenere wine will delight the middle of your palette with strong flavours. Most Carmenere contain a decent alcohol content ranging between 14.5 - 15.%.
