Durif
Durif is a blend between Syrah (Shiraz) and Peloursin. It is rightfully named after its creator, Dr. Durif who was determined to develop a grape hybrid that could resist downy mildew.
Downy mildew is a fungus that would affect the quality of other grape vines. The Durif grape was prone to rotting as the newly created grape would grow in extremely tight bunches. Because of this, the grape struggled to grow in France. Durif needed a warmer climate with less rain to grow the way it was intended. Soon after, Durif would be introduced to California where it would thrive.
The warm Australian climate is also ideal for growing the Durif grape and it incredibly popular around the continent. The Durif grape produces rich, full-bodied red wines with a high acidity. When the wine is kept in new oak barrels it can produce a strong taste of chocolate. Usually the wine appears as a rich, dark red wine that has undertones of blueberries, plums and blackberries.
The Durif leaf is easily recognisable with its large, green top colour and a darker green bottom.
