Organic & Preservative Free Red Wine
The term ‘'preservative free’ means that no preservatives were added during the making of the wine.
Most red wines create natural preservatives during the fermentation process, such as tannin.
The most common preservative in red wine is Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), which is also used to preserve dried fruit. If a wine contains SO2 as a preservative it will be listed as code ‘220’ on the wine label.
The use of SO2 is widely used because of anti-oxidative and anti-microbial qualities. It’s not possible to have wine completely free of SO2 because it naturally occurs during fermentation.
Organic wines are made from grapes that have been farmed organically, free from pesticides and other chemicals.
Organic wines in Australia typically contain approximately 50% less sulphites than non-organic wines.
