Sweet Red Wine
Sweet red wines are becoming increasingly popular around the world.
Sweet red wines are made by altering the fermentation process. When grapes are fermented into wine, the sugar from the grape slowly converts to alcohol. By stopping this process early, grape sugar remains in the wine which makes it sweeter than other red wines.
It is important to note that because the fermentation process is stopped early, more sugar is contained in sweet red wines. Sweet wines like Tawny port can sometimes contain up to 100 calories more than a dry red wine. The combination of higher than usual sugar levels, mixed with a high alcohol content, makes sweet red wine best consumed in moderation.
Popular sweet red wines include port, black muscat, lambrusco and schiava.
