Primitivo / Zinfandel
Zinfandel made its way to America in the early 19th century and has since become a popular grape in California.
Since finding a home in America the Zinfandel grape has been used to develop an assortment of dry and sweet red wines and is grown in more than 10 percent of California vineyards.
During the 1990’s, dry red Zinfandel became increasingly popular in America and red Zinfandel is widely considered a signature wine of the United States.
Zinfandel is also grown in other popular wine regions including Australia and South Africa. It is sometimes bottled in these regions as Primitivo. Research that was carried out in the 1990’s and early 2000’s concluded that Zinfandel is identical to the Primitivo grape. Since then many wine enthusiasts from America were displeased with the loss of American individuality the grape now possessed.
High sugar content found in the grape allows for a high alcoholic wine to be produced.
