Try as you might, there is utterly no better Fathers Day gift than dad’s favourite tipple. So ditch the idea of a new pair of socks and give him something he really wants because let’s face it, alcohol is a time-honoured gift. Best of all, it doesn’t need wrapping.
After much deliberation, we’ve put together a list of gift-worthy bottles, categorised by dads’ favourite spirits. So you just need to know his drop of choice then you’re sorted. But if you aren’t sure, don’t worry. Just pick any one and tell him variety is the spice of life.
Whisky
If dad likes to walk on the wild side, a bottle of whisky will be much appreciated.
Glen Grant 10 year – Dancing on the palate with soft and lively notes of orchard fruits and malt with a finish that is long and complex. Winner of the 2016 Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible for Single Malts of the Year.
Kilkerran 12 year old – The palate is initially fruity with citrus notes followed by vanilla, butterscotch and honeycomb. Velvet and smooth with a lemon meringue finish, the smoothest Kilkerran to date.
Yamazaki 12 year old – A leading Japanese whiskey with dried fruit and honey aromas. Delicate mellow taste with a lingering woody dry finish. Winner Double Gold San Francisco World Spirit Awards 2013 and Gold San Francisco World Spirit Awards 2014 & 2011.
Bourbon
If dad appreciates a good bourbon, have a look at these two beauties.
Russels Reserve Single Barrel – A big bold Kentucky whiskey that explodes on the palate. Matured in heavily charred casks.
Willet Potsill Bourbon – A big spicy whisky that’s on the drier side. Aromas of grilled corn, roasted nuts and vanilla and a hint of blood orange emerge with time. Beautifully presented in a bottle shaped like a copper pot still.
Rum
There’s nothing illegal about wanting to be number one. Pick up one of these rums for dad and you’re sure to be his favourite.
Canefire No5 Spiced Rum – Blended from French oak barrels that are less than five years old for a unique taste, smell and colour.
Penny Blue – This Mauritian Rum has a long life with sweet aged oaky notes and gentle spices.
Tequila
There’s no need to fork out for airfare tickets to Mexico, give him the next best thing.
Espolon Tequila – A premium, medium-full bodied tequila with rich roasted agave and tropical fruit flavours with a long, spicy finish.
Vodka
Even if dad doesn’t hail from Russia (or Sweden in this instance), a vodka will go down very nicely.
Karlsson Gold – A balanced and smooth spirit possessing unique qualities of character and taste. Unfiltered to preserve the richness of delicate young potatoes.
Gin
If a botanical is your dad’s bounty, choose one of these fruity favourites.
Four Pillars Bloody Shiraz –Yarra Valley Shiraz grapes are steeped in Four Pillars Rare Gin for eight weeks to allow their flavour and colour to bleed into the gin. Sweet and spicy with a peppery, dense raspberry character.
Kilderkin Scoundrel – A well balanced classic gin distilled to the highest standards. Notes of juniper and coriander, balanced with cinnamon, verum, green and brown cardamom and other botanicals along with accents of fresh citrus.
Liqueur
If dad likes his drinks layered, then a liqueur is a likely choice.
Licor 43 – this smooth liqueur is made from a secret Spanish family recipe of Mediterranean citrus fruits infused with botanicals. It’s versatile with flavours of vanilla, citrus and caramel.
So there you have it, nothing says Fathers’ Day like a good bottle of his favourite spirit. Here’s to all dads, enjoy your day!
