Maker’s Mark began in 1954 when Bill Samuels Sr had the desire to develop a full-bodied bourbon that didn’t have a strong rye aftertaste.
He wanted an easy-drinking bourbon, that didn’t quite exist at the time. His experience baking bread with different grains gave him the idea to develop his bourbon with soft, winter wheat instead of rye. This unconventional method led to a sweet bourbon that no longer had the bitter rye aftertaste.
In 2008, Bill Samuels Sr decided to create a bourbon that was more intense than his original creation. He wanted Maker's 46 to be much sweeter, with more vanilla and caramel tastes.
This complex method involved modifying barrels with 10 virgin French oak staves to guarantee tannins were locked in the wood to keep them away from the whisky. This would allow Maker’s to create a very sweet drink that is bottled at 94 proof.
